Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative and complimentary medicine that uses essential oils and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of maintaining and improving a person's health and beauty. Certified aromatherapy pratitioners are professionally trained in the properties of application and contraindications of essential oils. The aromas of essential oils directly stimulate the brain, and the essences are absorbed through the skin, the respiratory system, and sense of smell. From there, these essences may improve mood, stimulate the immune system, improve cognitive function, improve circulation, and other aspects of physical and psychological health. They affect the whole body, and heighten the body's own natural healing function.

Aromatherapy massage is a holistic treatment based on the external use of essential oils diluted in plant carrier oils to maintain and promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Other application methods include aromatic bath, compresses, sprays or room diffusers.

The word "Aromatherapy" was coined in 1928 by a French chemist, Réné Maurice Gattefossé, but the practice of aromatherapy did not begin there. Aromatic plants and herbs have been used for healing since the dawn of humankind. When headaches, sore muscles, burns, coughs, skin conditions, and any other common health complaints arose, healers of the time looked to the local flora for healing.

Today, aromatherapy is practiced both as an alternative medicine and as a beauty therapy. Aromatherapy's holistic qualities provide benefit to the body, mind and spirit.
