By definition, essential oils are the natural aromatic substances extracted from plant sources. Most essential oils are extracted by steam distillation of the flowers, leaves, bark, wood or roots of the plant, but other extraction methods may also be used. If solvents are the method used, the oils are called Absolutes, rather than essential oils.
